Optimized Aircraft Painting through VR Immersion!

The Virtual Reality Paint Trainer (VRPT) is an innovative solution dedicated to training aircraft painters in the key concepts and correct muscle memory necessary to efficiently paint C5 and Global Hawk aircraft at Robins AFB, GA. Developed under a Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) contract, the solution realistically renders the aircraft, paint and safety peripherals, and paint hanger used in support of the RAFB Aircraft Maintenance Group (AMXG) mission.

F3 Solutions worked with a reputable virtual reality developer to create a learning management system (LMS) that effectively facilitates instruction of the RAFB trainer-provided coursework. We interviewed paint Subject Matter Experts, trainers, and personnel to understand what they felt was missing from current training practices. Our team filmed, mapped and modeled the paint hangar, equipment, and C5 Galaxy/Global Hawk aircraft to create realistic interactive environments/assets.

We provided iterative development of the solution, engaging with end-users and experienced painters to ensure the trajectory of development adhered to user-friendliness and technical accuracy.

The VRPT renders realistic paint panels, materials, aircraft, and environments with interactive support systems (grounding points, fluid/air pressure sources/manifolds, atmospheric controls, lighting equipment, stands, scaffolding) and safety equipment (breathing systems, fall-restraint, personal protective equipment, eye-washing stations, fire extinguishers). It teaches correct/safe painting based on USAF Corrosion Prevention/Control and Coating Application/Removal requirements and simulates appropriate paint settings, gun adjustments (fan pattern, PSI, etc.), and free movement within the virtual hangar. It also integrates an LMS that records all activity/data to support better training.

Students in the Top Gun Virtual Reality Center of Excellence

Users learn the following paint skills: OSHA/Safety protocol; as individual with acceptable score; and as team with acceptable score. They can select various paint guns and products (polycoat, primer, topcoat) with configurable properties (viscosity, opacity, color, spray type). Virtual “helpers” forming concentric circles appear along the user’s painting path and advise them on multiple aspects affecting technique. The helpers inform users if they are moving correctly (speed, distance, angle) and using the proper amount of paint. To further ensure learning retention, the VRPT incorporates an actual paint gun trigger, hose, and air compressor for haptic feedback. This physical response and real-time error warnings solidify learning of specific techniques/muscle memory needed to paint correctly.

During two recent 1-hr training sessions, the VRPT proved effective by increasing the Transfer Efficiency of 16 users by an average of about 42%. We have been also marketing the VRPT at conferences and installations like the F15 TCP WWR, MilSim VR Summit, the Navy Training Center, and to Tinker and Hill AFB Process Engineers. We are excited to proliferate this solution throughout the DoD and Private Industry, anywhere painter training is needed!

Continuous Training Improvement

Interest in the initial VRPT has yielded in a plethora of Phase III follow-on contracts that continue to improve the solution with new assets and training modules. Read the below articles for details.
